Welcome to Shetland Showing Tack
The Renowned All Suede Saddle Pad
When I designed the Saddle Pad for my niece's Shetland pony I never envisaged it would become the most popular saddle pad worn by Shetland ponies worldwide.
Due to increased interest from owners of other breeds and types of pony I have introduced additional sizes this year. I now regularly fit Welsh Section A, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Fell and Highland ponies.
If you want a saddle that;
a) Fits the pony and does not restrict the movement of the shoulder.
b) Complements the overall 'picture' of pony and rider.
c) Does not slip around the pony's stomach or up the ponies neck.
d) Increases the riders confidence by providing a secure seat and therefore attaining a correct position in the saddle.
As a senior panel judge for the British Show Pony Society and the National Pony Society I have seen first hand the consequences of ill fitting saddles. Ponies obviously uncomfortable, saddles too narrow , girths too tight, causing chaffing, rubbing and sores with the rider either sitting on the pony's withers or slipping around a rotund stomach.
There are very few conventional saddles that "sit" correctly on a Shetland pony. On the whole they are far too bulky and sit on top of the pony with the jockey perched spread eagled across the saddle due to the width of pony plus saddle. When I see this I always liken it to someone riding on top of anlen elephant!
The Suede Saddle Pad is of simple design, comfortable and flattering to the pony, straight cut to enhance the pony's shoulder, close fitting, neat and most importantly stays in place.
For the rider, being all suede the pad provides maximum grip regardless of the size of the jockey. The saddle pad is made from material and hide that is extremely pliable and moulds to the shape of the pony which ensures the rider has close contact with pony. Furthermore, being a single panelled saddle helps the rider attain a secure seat and correct leg position.
"D" Rings are fitted on the front as standard to accommodate daisy reins and side reins. Discreet removable "balance straps" are also available for the younger rider to hold (check before using balance straps in the show ring as some societies do not allow their use).
I also have a range of ridden and in hand English leather bridles, neat 3/4" English stirrup leathers, numnahs specifically for the saddle pads, training equipment including rollers, elasticated side reins and small pony bits. I can make any item for any size pony or horse, please don't hesitate telephoning me to discuss your individual requirements.
Please have a look at the "Winners Gallery" page with photographs of ponies and riders successfully using their Saddle Pads. Thank you to all the owners and riders for the use of their photographs.
Feedback and ideas are encouraged, as are photographs of ponies who are using their Saddle pad, especially ponies taking part in activities outside the show ring, such as racing, PC rallies, hunting, gymkhana etc.
